BAE Systems, one of the world’s leading defense contractors, is looking for an experienced people leader to grow and develop our team of Software Engineers in Sterling Heights, MI, as well as our software and simulation lab capabilities. The Software Engineering Manager reports to the Electrical, Software and Controls Engineering Director and will be a functional leader supervising a group of software engineers in Sterling Heights.
The Software Engineering Manager is a functional manager responsible for the management our software capability area and for the technical vitality of the associated people, processes, and infrastructure. As a Software Manager, you will develop and implement a practical and affordable approach to incrementally modernizing combat vehicle and weapon systems software and software development practices. You will research and adapt product line architectures and designs to improve the affordability and reliability of systems within our product lines.
As a Software Engineering Section Manager, you will:
o Define, maintain, and improve software design and development process, to include procedures, standards, guidelines, templates, and effort estimation guidance.
o Support business winning activities.
o Support program proposal efforts including work estimation review and approval.
o Support definition of software architecture for armament, ammunition handling systems and combat vehicle platforms.
o Support integration and test efforts for software engineering.
o Manage training strategy and activities for department.
o Support tool development and deployment in support of Digital Engineering initiatives.
o Lead a team of software engineers and supporting various programs.
o Perform comprehensive planning relative to functional capacity and capability.
Establish and maintain the technical vitality of people, processes, and infrastructure for the software organization.
o Develop and maintain software lab infrastructure and capabilities.
o Other duties include, but are not limited to: providing technical expertise to programs/projects, participating in peer reviews, performing independent phase and design reviews, performing reviews for pursuits, supporting bids and proposals, and supporting Internal Research and Development (IRAD) planning.
Required Skills and Education
o Bachelor’s Degree in Software Engineering or related field plus 10 years of hands-on software architecture, design, and development experience.
o Mastery of software engineering, inclusive of theory, contemporary state of the practice, processes, languages, and tools.
o Previous experience leading a technical team, preferably 10+ direct employees.
o Experience with hardware and software integration.
o Practical knowledge and experience with software development and verification engineering processes.
o Working knowledge of Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) with experience supporting an appraisal including evidence collection/review and participation in the interview process.
o Working knowledge of cybersecurity tenets and their practical application in software engineering as well as a general understanding of the RMF process.
Preferred Skills and Education
o Experience working in a software and simulations lab environment.
o Master’s Degree in Engineering/Science plus 12 or more years of hands-on design/development program experience.
o Experience in software development in a combat vehicle, weapon system or other Department of Defense platform.
o Contemporary and relevant design/development program experience.
o Experience with DevOps software development environment.
o Experience with ADA, Python, C-Family programming languages or Red Hat.
o Experience with Built In Test development.
o Experience with requirements based verification.
o Working knowledge of Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) and Control Account Manager duties.
o Certification as a CMMI Associate.
o DoD-recognized cybersecurity certification
o Experience in Agile Software Development
o Experience with Atlasian Tool suite, Kubernetes, GitLab, National Instruments tools
