ChatGPT is a Cyber Threat.

As AI-powered chatbots become more prevalent, businesses need to be aware of the potential risks associated with them. While they offer many benefits, they also present unique dangers that can put organizations at risk of cyberattacks. Hackers can use chatbots like ChatGPT to conduct more sophisticated attacks, making it harder for users to detect potential cyber threats. To avoid such losses, companies must re-evaluate their procedures and understand the risks.

According to NordVPN research, the number of new posts on dark web forums about AI tools surged by 625% from January to February. On these forums, bot exploitation has become a popular topic, with discussions ranging from programming ChatGPT to produce basic malware to taking over control of the chatbot, creating a malfunction, and wreaking havoc. This allows anyone on the dark web to obtain expertise on “breaking ChatGPT” or using it as a phishing tool.

Chatbots can also be used for social engineering attacks such as phishing or pretexting, making it easy for hackers to manipulate users into revealing confidential information or performing certain tasks. ChatGPT is a Cyber Threat is especially concerning because poorly worded emails or grammatical errors can be avoided with the use of ChatGPT, allowing cybercriminals from non-English speaking countries to participate in cybercrimes on a larger scale.

Moreover, ChatGPT experienced a data breach in March, exposing users’ personal information such as chat logs and credit card details. This shows that using the platform poses high risks to privacy, and any information added to the chatbot may be at risk of being leaked. This is particularly true when chatbots are used for marketing purposes or writing emails, as they require personal or business information to function.

To protect businesses and employees, it is essential to educate them about social engineering attacks and conduct cyberattack simulation exercises regularly. Risk assessment is also crucial because ChatGPT is a Cyber Threat, and is followed by creating a plan to tackle any challenge that may arise. Investing in quality cybersecurity tools that prevent threats, offer network segmentation, identification, and access management, maintain IDS policies and data integrity checks for threat detection, and have clear post-mortem analysis and backup policies for threat mitigation can also help prevent data breaches.

While ChatGPT is a Cyber Threat, it is an excellent tool for automating tasks and increasing efficiency, it is equally important to be critical about the information we input and company-wide procedures. Companies must understand the risks associated with AI-powered chatbots and take the necessary measures to stay safe. Prevention is always cheaper than a breach.
